Fire Extinguisher

In a fire, the first line of defense is a fire extinguisher. But do you know how to use one properly? Understanding the different types of fire extinguishers and their uses is crucial to fire safety.

Fire extinguishers are classified based on the types of fires they can put out. The most common types are Class A, B, and C. Class A extinguishers are designed for fires involving combustible materials such as paper, wood, or cloth. Class B extinguishers are designed for fires involving flammable liquids, such as gasoline or oil. Class C extinguishers are designed for fires involving electrical equipment.

It’s important to know which type of extinguisher to use on different types of fires, as using the wrong type can be dangerous or even make the fire worse. For example, using a water-based extinguisher on an electrical fire can result in electrocution.

Once you have the correct type of extinguisher, remember the acronym PASS:

P – Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.

A – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.

S – Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

S – Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire until it is extinguished.

It’s also important to know the limitations of a fire extinguisher. They are designed to put out small fires, not to control large or spreading fires. In the event of a large fire, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.

Another critical aspect of fire extinguisher safety is proper maintenance. Fire extinguishers should be inspected regularly to ensure they are in good working condition. This includes checking the pressure gauge, inspecting the nozzle and hose, and ensuring the pin and tamper seal are intact. Fire extinguishers should also be recharged or replaced after use.

Finally, fire extinguishers should be easily accessible and visible. They should be mounted in a visible and easily accessible location, with signage indicating their location. Ensure everyone knows where the nearest fire extinguisher is located and how to use it.

Fire extinguisher safety is essential to overall fire safety. Understanding the different types of extinguishers is important. How to use them, as well as properly maintaining them, can help prevent small fires from becoming big ones and keep your workplace safe.
