Two separate tracks: RP-001-REQ required-user knowledge and RP-001-VOL voluntary-use awareness. Neither confers medical clearance, a fit-test result, work authorization, program-administrator competence or specialist entry/rescue qualification.

Seven required-use training elements

K011910.134(k)(1)(i)Why protection is needed; effect of poor fit, use and carewhy-protection, limits, seal, careActual exposure, controls, task and equipment teach-back.

Delivery, timing and separate prerequisites

AreaBasisCourse treatment and remaining evidence
Required use versus voluntary use(a), (c)(1)–(2), (k)(6)Employer requirement is required use. Voluntary use requires no-hazard screening and actual Appendix D information.
Understandable instruction and timing(k)(2)–(5)Before required use; annual and triggered retraining. Previous training credit is conditional and its repeat deadline remains tied to the previous training date. Actual task instruction and demonstrated knowledge remain separate.
Human interaction and safe practice(k); OSHA 2019-07-11 interpretationEmployer supplies appropriate timely access to a knowledgeable/qualified trainer and sufficient actual practice. The site discussion board is asynchronous; no response time is guaranteed.
Medical gate(e), (m)(1)PLHCP evaluation before fit testing or required use. Additional evaluations follow rule triggers and PLHCP recommendations; no universal annual medical interval is invented. Confidential medical record process under 1910.1020.
Fit-test gate(f), Appendix A, (m)(2)Accepted method for the same tight-fitting make/model/style/size before initial use, at least annually and for applicable changes; formal result retained until next fit test. No quiz or seal check substitutes.
Seal and actual use(g)(1)–(2), Appendix B-1Address sealing-surface/valve interference, compatible PPE, each-donning seal check and safe withdrawal. Actual device demonstration in a protected setting remains employer evidence.
Selection and cartridge life(d), (j)Actual contaminant/form/exposure and user factors, NIOSH-approved configuration, APF/MUC/limits and suitable ESLI or objective change schedule. No odor-only schedule.
Care and condition(h), Appendix B-2Routine before-use/during-cleaning inspection; model-specific cleaning, storage, defect removal and permitted repair. Shared devices before another user, training/fit-test devices after each use.
IDLH and supplied-air boundary(d)(1)(iii), (d)(2), (g)(3)–(4), (i)Unknown exposure treated as IDLH for selection. This core excludes IDLH entry, supplied-air work, firefighting and rescue qualification. Actual specialized programs and training required.
Voluntary filtering-facepiece exception(c)(2), (k)(6), Appendix D; 2018 interpretationsOnly voluntary filtering-facepiece use: written-program exception, no mandatory fit test or medical evaluation solely for that screened use; no-hazard determination and Appendix D remain.
Other voluntary devices(c)(2)(ii); 2018 interpretationsRelevant written program for medical ability, cleaning, storage and maintenance. Required medical evaluations at employer cost. Do not apply the filtering-facepiece exception to every device.
Program and records(c)(3)–(4), (l), (m)Qualified administrator, employer costs, evaluations as needed and regular worker consultation. Medical, fit-test, written-program and knowledge evidence remain distinct. No universal training-certificate form or retention period invented.
Academy assessment ruleCourse design, not an OSHA score80% plus every critical item correct; unlimited practice; three final attempts per set with targeted review; further set requires approved remediation/reset. Native account records are server-graded. External LMS imports require their own acceptance checks.

Nine historical RAVS inputs

InputTopicCurrent federal basisCourse mapping / evidence
RAV-1Initial, annual and triggered training1910.134(k)(1)–(5)Required lessons and training-records; employer training/retraining record.
RAV-2Controls and provision of needed respirators1910.134(a), (c)(4)why-protection; actual hazard/selection worksheet.
RAV-3Hazard-based selection and NIOSH approval1910.134(d), (j)limits, cartridges; actual technical selection remains employer evidence.
RAV-4Medical evaluation before fit test/use1910.134(e), (m)(1)medical, health-signs; confidential medical records are excluded from normal LMS records.
RAV-5Fit testing of tight-fitting users1910.134(f), (m)(2)fit-test; accepted actual test and exact device record. Not a blanket duty for every voluntary device.
RAV-6Facial hair and seal interference1910.134(g)(1)seal; identify interference at the sealing surface or valve. Avoid an overbroad all-device beard ban.
RAV-7IDLH arrangements or operating exclusion1910.134(d)(2), (g)(3)–(4)limits, emergencies; this core excludes IDLH entry, supplied-air work, firefighting and rescue qualification.
RAV-8Cleaning and storage1910.134(h)(1)–(2)care; actual intervals, compatible method and protected storage.
RAV-9Inspection before use and during cleaning1910.134(h)(3)–(4)inspect; actual model checks and approved defect/repair process.

Primary sources reviewed October 21, 2026

Use the federal rule with actual manufacturer instructions, substance-specific rules and applicable State Plan requirements. Construction 1926.103 applies identical respiratory-protection requirements; that does not remove other construction duties.

Development inputs: the current SHP-007 Respiratory Protection Program approved development template (Library version 1); RAVS_Requirements (46).pdf, exported July 22, 2022, nine questions; and training inventory TR-008. Template approval and historical contractor review results are not course validation, current client acceptance or employer authorization. Historical employer names, responses and approval marks are not reproduced. The questionnaire’s Cal/OSHA references require current employer-specific review; no State Plan equivalence is asserted.
