Recognize asbestos and health risks
Learning objective: Explain the hazard and report suspect material without disturbing it.
Asbestos is a group of mineral fibers formerly used widely for heat resistance and strength. It can occur in pipe insulation, sprayed fireproofing, floor systems, roofing, cement products and friction materials. Appearance alone cannot confirm or rule out asbestos.
Breathing released fibers can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Disease may appear decades after exposure. Feeling well today does not show that yesterday’s exposure was acceptable.
Smoking and asbestos together greatly increase lung-cancer risk. Quitting smoking is valuable, but it does not remove the employer’s duty to prevent asbestos exposure. Ask for the employer’s public-health smoking-cessation resources.
Intact material managed in place may present a different risk from material being cut or damaged. Do not touch, sample, drill or sweep suspected material to identify it. Report its location and condition from a safe position.
