Your first shift with this crew
Learning objective: Name who directs your task, where you can wait safely and one question to ask before starting.

Imagine meeting the crew at daybreak. The lead points across the work area and says, “Give them a hand over there.” You can see the people. You still need to know which route to take, where to stop and who is expecting you.
Get three answers
- My task. What exactly am I doing today? What must someone else do?
- My place. Where can I walk or stand while gear, vehicles, animals or people are moving?
- My person. Who is directing the work? How will we know a signal was received?
A wave may mean “I see you,” “come forward” or “stay there.” Crews need an agreed signal. At a loading area or on deck, stay in the agreed safe place until you receive and understand the direction for your task.
Point out the route on a map or have the lead show it from a safe place. Say it back in your own words. If two people give different directions, pause and get one clear plan before moving.
