Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services Safety Orientation

Choose administrative, business and staffing support; cleaning, facilities and property support; grounds and pest-control support; security and site support; or waste, recycling and remediation support. Practice hazard recognition, client-site handoffs, task limits, protection and Stop and Ask. Allow 30–60 minutes total for the online orientation and the walkthrough with your supervisor.

Confirm the assignment and client-site limits

Learning objective: Know what you are assigned to do, where you may go and who can help.

What this sector covers

Sector 56 includes services that support other organizations and households, such as office support, staffing, cleaning, grounds services, security, waste collection and remediation. A temporary assignment does not change the host business’s industry. Not every outsourced service belongs to Sector 56. These jobs do not share one hazard list. The actual task and location matter. An office-support assignment does not prepare someone for waste handling at a client site.

Choose the closest work setting

The five course paths are overlapping examples, not official industry divisions or a complete list of jobs. They cover administrative and staffing support; cleaning and facilities support; grounds and pest-control support; security and site-support visits; and waste, recycling and remediation support. Some travel, event or other support roles fit more than one example. Ask your employer which local instructions apply.

Connect the employer and the host

A host controls the site where you are assigned. Your employer and the client or host must coordinate the work and relevant hazards. For staffing-agency workers, both the agency and host have safety responsibilities; the exact duties depend on the facts. An agency overview alone is not enough for unfamiliar site equipment or exposures. Know the on-site lead, your employer or agency contact, and a backup.

Keep the course limits clear

This is a general safety overview for administrative, support, waste and remediation workplaces. It is not HAZWOPER training and provides no required initial, refresher, supervisor or emergency-response training credit. It also gives no required training credit for hazardous-waste rules (RCRA) or hazardous-materials transport (DOT). It does not replace employer, host-site or task-specific instruction, supervised experience, qualifications or work authorization. It does not qualify hazardous-waste handling, pesticide application, security response, equipment or electrical work, asbestos or lead abatement, confined-space entry, respirator use or rescue. Required credentials, licenses and local permission remain separate.

Confirm before starting

Ask for the assignment, permitted route, work boundaries and needed preparation. A badge, service ticket, short shift or client request does not qualify a task. Have the lead explain and, where appropriate, demonstrate the method. Repeat the plan in your own words. Keep the affected task on hold when the handoff leaves a gap.

Words you can use“My assignment is new at this site. Please confirm the task, local limits and who can help before I start.”

Source context: See the U.S. sources linked in the course resources

Begin the supervisor or host walkthrough at a permitted meeting point. Confirm the assignment, employer and client-site contacts, backup, age and task limits, qualifications, local routes, handling aids, equipment boundaries, sharps reporting, task PPE, applicable SDS access, outdoor or lone-work arrangements and emergency resources. Record open questions, owners, follow-up times and affected tasks that must wait. Exclude access codes, confidential client or personnel records and private medical details. The employer records this separately; the online result and worksheet provide no HAZWOPER credit, specialized qualification, entry permission or work authorization.
