Separate evacuation, brigade and system roles
Learning objective: Identify the actual role, system and applicable rule before assigning work.
Fire protection involves several different jobs. Most employees report a fire and leave under the emergency action plan. A designated fire brigade has defined response duties. System personnel inspect, maintain, operate or repair particular equipment. One person may hold several roles only when each role is supported by the required training and controls.
Section 1910.156 covers employer-established brigades, industrial fire departments and private or contractual fire departments. Its scope excludes airport crash rescue and forest firefighting. It does not require every workplace to form a brigade. This course focuses on general-industry requirements; other industries and state plans need their own applicability review.
Automatic sprinklers installed to meet OSHA requirements fall under 1910.159. Other fixed systems installed for an OSHA requirement fall under 1910.160. Some systems installed for other reasons still have specified duties when their extinguishing agent can harm employees. Exemption from one provision does not cancel applicable building or fire codes.
This is a knowledge course. Reading about a response does not demonstrate the ability to perform it. Practical instruction, physical capability, respiratory protection, local procedures and system-specific competence must be resolved before assignment. A certificate does not authorize interior firefighting, rescue or system alteration.
