Flammables, LPG and Anhydrous Ammonia

Recognize chemical and fire hazards. Learn storage, handling, LPG training, ammonia transfer oversight and emergency requirements. Fourteen audible lessons; allow about 40–55 minutes.

Identify the material, work and applicable rule

Learning objective: Identify the actual chemical, activity and applicable requirements before assignment.

Flammable liquids, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and anhydrous ammonia need different controls. Start with the product identity, safety data sheet (SDS), work task and equipment. A familiar trade name or container color does not establish what is inside.

General-industry rules include 1910.106 for flammable liquids, 1910.110 for LPG and 1910.111 for covered anhydrous ammonia systems. Construction has separate flammable-liquid and LPG rules in 1926.152 and 1926.153. Do not copy a storage limit or procedure across industries without checking its scope.

The ammonia rule includes refrigerated ammonia storage, but excludes ammonia manufacturing plants and refrigeration plants using ammonia solely as refrigerant. Exclusion from this particular rule does not remove duties under other applicable standards, such as hazard communication or process safety management.

This course is a worker and supervisor knowledge component. It does not qualify someone to design a system, install piping, fill containers, unload a tank car, enter a hazardous atmosphere or perform emergency response. The employer must provide the actual task instruction, controls and verification.

Source context: 29 CFR 1910.106, 1910.110, 1910.111(a); 1926.152, 1926.153

Online knowledge component only. Actual chemical, equipment and task instruction, practical verification, respiratory protection and emergency-role training remain separate. Completion does not authorize system design, installation, transfer operations or emergency entry.
