Identify covered wheels and work
Learning objective: Identify the actual wheel type and applicable standard before accepting a servicing assignment.
Rim wheel servicing includes mounting, demounting, inflating, deflating, installing, removing and handling. OSHA 1910.177 covers single-piece and multi-piece rim wheels on large vehicles such as trucks, tractors, trailers, buses and off-road machines. It excludes automobile wheels and pickup trucks or vans using automobile tires or tires designated LT. Do not assume every van tire has that designation.
A multi-piece wheel has interlocking components, including a side or locking ring that holds the tire. A single-piece wheel has one wheel component, but its pressurized tire can still release destructive energy. Identify the actual design using markings and the applicable manual; appearance alone is insufficient.
Federal 1910.177 expressly excludes employment regulated under construction, agriculture and longshoring standards. Construction 1926.600(a)(2) separately requires a safety tire rack, cage or equivalent protection when inflating, mounting or dismounting tires on split rims or rims with locking rings or similar devices. The employer must identify applicable jurisdiction and state-plan requirements.
This course explains the general-industry standard and the separate construction provision. It is not a wheel-specific service manual or permission to work. The employer must provide actual procedures, suitable equipment, training and evaluation for the wheel types assigned. An excluded vehicle type is not a declaration that tire servicing is harmless.
