Separate the card from current work readiness
OSHA states that its Construction, General Industry, Maritime and Disaster Site student Outreach completion cards do not have an expiration date. That describes the federal Outreach card. A state, local jurisdiction, employer, union, client or project can set additional recency or acceptance requirements. Check the requirement that governs the actual assignment.
A card documents completion of the Outreach class. It does not establish present knowledge of a changed process, a current equipment authorization or completion of every task-specific training duty. Before assignment, compare the worker’s role with the required instruction, practical demonstration and employer authorization.
Keep the original provider information with your training records. OSHA does not maintain individual Outreach class records or replace cards itself. Its current replacement-card rules generally require contacting the original trainer or provider, a class within the last five years, and only one replacement per student per class. A card that cannot be replaced is a records problem to resolve; it is not the same question as whether the original card expired.
Before the task
- Confirm the industry and class shown on the card.
- Check project and jurisdiction recency requirements.
- Verify task-specific training and authorization separately.
Fictional work example
A contractor accepts an employee’s older OSHA 30 card, but the project owner requires Outreach training within a stated period. The supervisor still needs to resolve that project requirement before assigning the employee.
Consider: Which record answers whether the employee can perform the task today?
Compare your reasoning
Use the current task-training, demonstrated-skill and authorization records together with applicable project requirements. The Outreach card answers only its own completion question.
