Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services Safety Orientation

Choose professional offices and client services, architecture and engineering field visits, computer and creative services, scientific research and testing laboratories, or veterinary practices. Practice hazard recognition, task limits, protection, clear handoffs and Stop and Ask. Allow 30–60 minutes total for the online orientation and the walkthrough with your supervisor.

Confirm the task and work setting

Learning objective: Know the assignment, local limits and person to ask before starting.

An engineering visitor takes notes while a host points to a briefing board in a paved meeting area outside a closed work-site fence; both wear helmets, high-visibility vests and boots. Review the host's briefing from the permitted meeting area before entering the site.

Start with your actual work

Sector 54 includes professional offices, computer and design services, engineering and field services, scientific research and testing, and veterinary services. Work may take place at a desk, studio, client site, laboratory or animal practice. Choose the closest of five example settings. They overlap and do not cover every job in the sector. Human medical diagnostic laboratories and ordinary pet boarding or grooming are different industry categories.

A project brief is a starting point

A client request, appointment, visitor badge, work order or research assignment does not confirm that you are ready for every task. Ask what you will do, where you may go, what must wait and who can help. A professional degree or experience at another employer does not replace the local briefing. Confirm the host contact and permitted meeting point before a client or field visit.

Keep the course limits clear

This is a general safety overview for professional, scientific and technical services. It does not replace employer, laboratory, practice or host-site instruction. It does not qualify you for laboratory procedures, animal handling or treatment, chemical or biological work, radiation or laser work, electrical or equipment work, roof access, confined-space entry or emergency-response duties. It grants no professional license, entry permission or work authorization. Your employer must confirm the training, skills, qualifications and permission for the actual task.

Check the handoff

Before starting, confirm the task, location, known concerns, local procedures and responsible lead. Explain the plan back so the lead can check your understanding. Ask what changes would require another discussion. Keep access codes, confidential client or research information and private medical details out of the general worksheet.

Words you can use“I understand the project goal. Please confirm my task, the permitted area and who will help if the plan changes.”

Source context: See the U.S. sources linked in the course resources

Begin the supervisor or host walkthrough at a permitted meeting point. Confirm task and age limits, qualifications, routes, workstation and handling support, local PPE, applicable SDS access and laboratory or other exposure procedures, field contacts, changed assignments and emergency resources. Record open questions, owners, follow-up times and affected tasks that must wait. Exclude access codes, private medical information and confidential client or research details. The employer records this separately; the online result and worksheet grant no professional license, laboratory or clinical qualification, entry permission or work authorization.
