Form Stripping: Verify the Release and Reshoring

A calendar date or a hard-looking surface does not establish that concrete can support the next load. Removing support is a planned structural transition, not simply cleanup.

Why this matters

A calendar date or a hard-looking surface does not establish that concrete can support the next load. Removing support is a planned structural transition, not simply cleanup.

Learning objective

Identify the area-specific removal release and verify the support and exclusion arrangements before stripping.

Key hazards or failure points

Wrong pour area; assumed strength; premature support removal; missing reshoring; falling panels; changing deck loads.

Practical controls

  • Confirm the employer's removal determination for the exact area, supported by the applicable plans/specifications or appropriate strength testing. Do not substitute an assumed number of days.
  • Follow the authorized removal and reshoring sequence. Identify the supports that must remain and who may approve a change.
  • Establish controlled access, panel handling and protected work positions before releasing fasteners or supports. Coordinate people above, below and beside the work.

Verify It in the Field

  • Match the pour identification and location to the release evidence and current plan. Have the responsible person explain which removal stage is authorized.
  • Compare required retained supports and reshoring with the actual arrangement from safe access. Confirm the anticipated loads remain within the determination.
  • Walk the exclusion boundary and material route without entering an unstable area. Record the release reference, support finding, checker and time.

Stop and reassess

Hold stripping for missing or mismatched release evidence, an altered sequence, unverified loads, missing supports or people in the drop area. Stop for unexpected movement. Keep clear and obtain the responsible technical review before resuming.

Crew discussion questions

  • What evidence releases this exact area and stage?
  • Which supports must remain or be installed next?
  • Who can approve a sequence change?

For each required control, record its acceptance source and criterion, safe verification method, responsible checker, actual result and time. Use VERIFIED, HOLD/NOT VERIFIED, or N/A with a reason. A tick alone is not evidence. Complete all applicable task inspections; do not enter danger or improvise a test to fill out a form.

Leader preparation and practical detail

Release by area and stage

Illustrative situation: one bay has a documented release, but an adjacent pour was placed later. The supervisor does not extend the first release by proximity. Confirm the evidence and sequence for each affected area.

Use the applicable strength basis

For the work within 1926.703(e)(1), the employer determines that concrete has sufficient strength for its own weight and superimposed loads. The rule identifies plan/specification conditions or appropriate ASTM strength testing as bases. It excludes forms for slabs on grade and slip forms from that paragraph; that exclusion does not make their removal hazard-free.

Treat reshoring as a separate duty

Reshoring is required where concrete would otherwise carry loads beyond its capacity, and cannot be removed until the supported concrete can carry its own weight and imposed loads. The sequence and capacity decision belong to the applicable design and responsible personnel, not a general toolbox checklist.

Prevent the next unreviewed load

Coordinate stripping with deliveries and other trades. New pallets, equipment or stored panels can change the loading basis. No universal curing age, strength number or engineer-signature rule is created by this talk.

Short supervisor field check

  • Match the pour identification and location to the release evidence and current plan. Have the responsible person explain which removal stage is authorized.
  • Compare required retained supports and reshoring with the actual arrangement from safe access. Confirm the anticipated loads remain within the determination.
  • Walk the exclusion boundary and material route without entering an unstable area. Record the release reference, support finding, checker and time.

Confirm the relevant trained/authorized people, unresolved items, interim protection, correction owner and recheck. Record required release authority and rebrief anyone affected. The separate sheet supports these records; it does not replace a specialist inspection, permit or engineering determination.

Attendance and follow-through

Use the separate attendance sheet for participants, roles, discussion concerns, actions and late-arrival rebriefs. Attendance is not proof of competence, functioning controls or authorization to work. Keep completed records private under employer procedures.
